Minnesota Attorney General Sues Over Recycling Bag Claims

(KNSI) — The Minnesota Attorney General's Office has filed suit against Walmart and the parent company of Hefty, saying their recycling bags are not recyclable in Minnesota and they are misleading consumers.

Ellison is accusing Reynolds Consumer Products and Walmart, which sells recycling bags under its private Great Value label, are made with a form of polyethylene, which can't be recycled here. The packaging for the bags, Ellison says, makes claims that the bags are compatible with municipal recycling programs, which they are not. The suit says any recyclable materials placed in those bags are then dumped into landfills and are not separated for recycling, or they get tangled in the machines making them less effective, and the material contaminates other recyclables like paper. The plaintiffs say stopping the machines to untangle the bags is also a safety hazard for workers.

Reynolds and Walmart are being sued for consumer fraud, deceptive environmental marketing claims, deceptive trade practices and false advertising.
